This novel is incredibly bloody and full of betrayal. It’s violent, but the intense action had my eyes pinned open late into the night. Seven Brief Lessons on Physics by Carolo Rovelli; translators Simon Carnell and Erica Segre (UK : Allen Lane, an imprint of Penguin Books, 2015). Call number: PSE Library QC24.5 C38 2015 I have always been a science-fiction fan, and I think that having at least a cursory interest in astronomy comes with the territory. I've spent hours watching meteor showers, and I freak out — and make a wish — whenever I see a shooting star. I was in the path of totality during the 2017 solar eclipse, which made me cry, and the 2019 lunar eclipse, which had me obsessively texting my friends with updates. In short, I love stars and the moon and the sun and whatever else is out there. In the frozen kingdom of Saiduan, invaders from another realm are decimating whole cities, leaving behind nothing but ash and ruin. As the dark star of the cataclysm rises, an illegitimate ruler is tasked with holding together a country fractured by civil war, a precocious young fighter is asked to betray his… As a senior executive, Kathy could have thousands of people in her organization. Wanting to know each and every one of them was a luxury she could not afford, so she did her best to make those opportunities she did have for meaningful connections, no matter how brief, to count for her and the other person with whom she was interacting.

I seem to be drawn to troubled characters—hence this list — and Robinette (Bob) Broadband is surely troubled. I grew up in farm country of central Indiana. But spent my summers on an island in northern Ontario with my grandparents. My grandfather was a self-taught naturalist and shared his love and fascination of the world around us with me. I went on to become a geologist and traveled the globe exploring for natural resources. My love of nature and science is the foundation for the science fiction I write. Whether a proven theory, a fantastical hypothesis, or true science fiction, it’s all based on science fact. It allows everyone to learn about a world built in science fiction which one day may exist in science fact. Quantum Fuzz: The Strange True Makeup of Everything Around Us by Michael S. Walker (Amherst, New York : Prometheus Books, 2017). Call number: PSE Library QC174.12 .W347 2017 If there is a book that truly helped me understand the vastness of the universe — the sheer scale of things — it’s this one. I usually enjoy painting pictures for storybooks about nature I know, so it was a treat to depict an imaginary place that I’ve never actually seen! I was so inspired to illustrate Mary’s story about the moon, as I could focus on creating an other-worldly atmosphere, adding to the drama that could have happened anywhere. The story focuses on Molly and her family moving to the moon and includes scientific facts about how gravity would impact their everyday life. I used Mary’s knowledge as reference to underpin the imaginative side of my process. Painting the inside of a moon module enabled me to use textures, colours, and lighting in such a fun, expressive way! NASA explores the unknown in air and space, innovates for the benefit of humanity, and inspires the world through discovery.

Kip Thorne is a pre-eminent theoretical physicist and was the main tech advisor on Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar”. If you like stuff that messes with your head, and your whole understanding of what we know as reality, this is the book for you! Oliver has just started secondary school and is wondering how he will fit in with new friends, new classes, new everything. But at least there's one thing that still makes sense: science! Determined to be an astrophysicist one day, Oliver explains everything he learns - like…In The Mirror Empire , two nearly identical worlds populated by violent people and sentient (also violent!) plants are at war with each other. Kip Thorne, along with fellow theorists Stephen Hawking and Roger Penrose, a cadre of Russians, and earlier scientists such as… On the eve of a recurring catastrophic event known to extinguish nations and reshape continents, a troubled orphan evades death and slavery to uncover her own bloody past... while a world goes to war with itself. A Journey into Gravity and Spacetime by John Archibald Wheeler (New York: Scientific American Library: Distributed by W.H. Freeman and Co, 1990). Call Number: PSE Library QB334 .W49 1990
